DVD Review:The Spectacular Legacy of the AWA
For many of you who dont know what the AWA is, I will tell you and you better go out and buy this dvd to catch up. The AWA was the American Wrestling Association and it was run by a man named Verne Gagne. Verne is one of the influential people in the history of this business. He was an accomplished amateur wrestler and even competed in the olympics. He broke many wrestlers into this business including Ken Patera, Jim Brunzell, The Iron Sheik, his own son Greg Gagne, Ric Flair, and Rick Steamboat just to name a few. The title of this dvd says it all. The AWA does have a very spectacular legacy and by not viewing this dvd and just reading about it from wrestlers who were there, you might think the AWA was a crappy promotion to work for if you never saw any AWA or are around my age and are a wrestling fan. When you read some wrestlers books, it does seem like no one would ever want to work for the AWA but they were a very good promotion and it is a shame they are not still around to this day because if they were, alot of things that have gone down since it shut down may have never happened. Who knows if the monday night war would have happened had the AWA still be around at that time. They were a company that was based around solid wrestling. They had their share of entertainers walk through like Dusty Rhodes, Superstar Billy Graham, and Hulk Hogan. The AWA though did produce some very big names. If you look at all of the stars that started in the AWA, you shall see that they were pretty influential in everything they did. They even acknowledge that in the dvd but how can you not point htat out. I have heard and read all of these horrible stories about the AWA but really, I dont understand why so many guys that worked for the AWA whine about how bad of a place it was. In Shawn Micheals book, he talks about the low pay in the AWA but if you look at the time he entered the AWA, they were in a down time and were never to recover. So when wrestlers whine about their pay, you have to look at the time frame. In Hogan’s book, he says you could work 4 days for the AWA and make the same aount as working 7 days in the WWE at the time. So right there it tells you that the AWA wrestlers were compensated very well for during the AWA’s boom. They were really the first to expand becaues they expanded as far as Vegas and as far north as Canada. I dont know if there were promotions in those areas at the time but back in the territory days, you could not expand out of your area but he did. Many call Vince the pioneer of that but he is not the first. He may have been the first to go to other territories and promote shows there but he was not the first to expand. There is debate on how the AWA collapsed. There are 2 main cases and one is being that the AWA never recovered when Vince started expanding and took their stars including Hogan. Some will say that Verne refused to change with the times. I think they went under because of not being able to change with the times. Companies can steal anotherr ones stars but you can recover when you lose some of your stars. Just look at the monday night war for example. WCW took some of the WWE’s stars but look who went under. Certainly not the WWE. It may be both. You might say Verne couldnt move past the old stars like Bockwinkel and Baron Van Rashke but that is an example of not changing with the times. I highly recommend this dvd and watch it and tell me your conclusion on why it went under.
