Would there be a WWE if there was no WCW?

It has been a month and I think and for the past month, something has been bothering me. About a month back when Eric Bischoff came out to talk about his new book, he was throwing around ideas of how if there was no WCW, today there would be no WWE. After I heard that I thought, what an idiot. The WWE was fully established before their whole feud with WCW so why would he be saying something so stupid. But the more I thought about it, I started to believe he was right and here is why. You see, in any entertainment field, especially pro wrestling, there is always competition. Cowboy Bill Watts said it best. He said “competition breeds awareness.” Competition does indeed breed awareness. If there was no competiton, everything would be boring and that is what exactly pro wrestling was in the early 90’s. They did not have that big of competition. At the time, WWE was the be all and end all of wrestling companies. The NWA (the predecessor to WCW) could have been very good competiton but the company was being poorly run by executives that didn’t belong in an office writing a wrestling show. The numbers for WWE were not that high and wrestling began to fall out of the spotlight and that was primarily due to the whole steroid scandal. You see, WWE was just throwing basically whatever they wanted on their shows and since there was no big time competition, they didn’t have to worry about their fans switching loyalties to another show. Then WCW came along with Hogan and Flair leading the way and they started blowing by WWE. Not only because their shows were starting to be more attractive than the WWE’s, they had an influx of talent from all over the world with styles fans had never seen before and the wrestling audience was becoming more and more attracted to it. Then th numbers hit another standstill and then WCW unleashed the NWO. It was nearly 2 years before WWE would beat WCW in the ratings war. It then required that WCW still produce good tv and WWE and to start doing the same thing because WWE was still being aimed at the families and WCW was being aimed at the teenage crowd and older. It forced both companies to bring out all guns blazing because now there was some heavy competition. You will never see that quality of competitiveness in wrestling again unless TNA starts firing their guns. Now back to my points. If WCW did not come around and start a war with the WWE, there would possibly be no WWE today because everyone would have gotten more tired of it and all of the fans would have turned off wrestling and never turn it on again. If there was no portraying being bad as cool, there would never have been a Stone Cold character. If there was no cool group like the NWO that were portraying being bad as cool, there definitely would never have been a group that was off the wall as you can get in DX. Competiton did definitely breed awareness in this period because like I said, the wrestling industry would never be where it is today if WCW did not come along and attempt some of these things that became huge successes. You see, WCW did attempt alot of successful things but if they didn’t, WWE would not have known those things could work so they could in the end, do them better and eventually, put WCW out of business. Even though WCW did fold, they were majorly successful and were pioneers in showing that being bad is cool and that some wrestling fans do like to see pure wrestling style. I was never a defender of WCW before this but when you look at the facts, they are the only ones to come close to putting WWE out of business by being innovative but as usual, sometimes, promotions stop being innovative and their competiton blows past them. Thanks again for visiting my blog and I hope you enjoyed this post. If you have anything else that I may have left out, feel free to leave a comment about it.
