Superstarstar Profile: Kurt Angle

This is the very first ever profile that I am going to do of a wrestler and I will do these when something major happens with someone or I just don’t have anything to write about. Well, if you have not heard yet and I am suprised if you have not heard yet, two weeks ago WWE released Kurt Angle. Many don’t know the true reason as to why he was let go but many believe it has to do with the fact that kately, Angle has had problems and was the first major guy suspended because of these problems and the fact that Angle is injury prone. Some say it might be his personal life but I don’t know for sure. Although I could talk all day about this topic, I do not want to dwell on this issue. I want to look back at Kurt Angle’s career and If we never see this man wrestle again, this will be a tribute to one of the most legitimate athletes ever to step into a wrestling ring. In 1996, this man won an olympic gold medal. And on top of having to work through top wrestlers from all over the world for this, he won his medal with a broken neck. That alone just shows the drive of Kurt. Now at Survivor Series 1999, he made his WWE debut. He went on to have an undefeated streak up until Royal Rumble 2000 in which newcomer and former ECW World champion TAZZ made his debut and beat Angle. In June of 2000, he won the King of the Ring and shortly afterwards he was put in a feud with HHH over Stephanie McMahons affections. Then at No Mercy 2000, he won his first world title from The Rock. So in just 11 months, he won the European title, the Intercontinental title, the King of the Ring, and the WWE title. Now tell me who ever had quite the rookie year like this guy did in the WWE. I don’t even think Brock Lesnar can add up to this guys standards for a rookie year. In 2001, Angle had an incredible series of matches with Chris Benoit and bcame the lead defender for WWE during the invasion after after Steve Austin defected to the alliance. He bacme a mole inside of the alliance and at Survivor Series 2001, helped the WWE live by taking out Stone Cold and putting WCW and ECW (the alliance) out of business. He had a pretty awkward year in 2002 as he was not in the main picture but still very near to the top. He took HHH’s WWE title shot away from him at No Way Out but lost it back to him the next night. He fought Kane at Wrestlemania 18 and beat him. The next notable thing happened when he made Hogan tap out at the King of the Ring. He was next in an amazing triple threat match for the WWE title that involved defending champ The Rock and the Undertaker. He fought Rey Mysterio at Summerslam, won the new WWE tag belts with Benoit and then to end the year defeated the Big Show for the WWE title. He had a very steady year if you think about it. In 2003, he had an incredible match with Lesnar at wrestlemania 19 in which he lost the WWE title and re broke his neck. He returned at Vengeance in July and won the belt back in a triple threat involving Big Show and defending champ Brock Lesnar. He made Brock tap at Summerslam to retain the WWE title but lost it back to Brock a couple of weels later. His last major thing of 2003 was being involved in a Survivor Series tag match with his Team Angle against Team Lesnar in which he won. He hurt himself in early 2004 and still had an incredible match with Eddie Guererro at Wrtestlemania 20 in which he lost. He returned to action by Summerslam and avenged his Wrestlemania loss by beating Guererro. That was his he lowest year I think because I can’t think of many things he did this year besides his feud with Eddie and being Smackdown GM. In 2005, he had an incredible series of matches with Shawn Michaels which started with a phenomenal match at Wrestlemania 21. In 2005, he was challenging John Cena for the WWE title but was unsucessful. In 2006, he was involved in an Elimination Chamber match for the WWE title and made it to the final 2 with Cena but was defeated yet again. Then he got signed to Smackdown and won the World title in a battle royal on the night Batista dropped the title due to injury. He defended against Undertaker in an awesome match at No Way Out and kept the thitle but at Wrestlemania 22, dropped the title to Mysterio in a triple threat match with Randy Orton als involved and was not the man pinned by the way. He broke Orton’s ankle in April at a Smackdown taping which I attended. He then got into a feud with Mark Henry and then in June was put in ECW. He failed a drug test and was suspended for awhile. He then came back for a little whie before tearing his groin. He was involved in a feud over the ECW title involving Sabu and the Big Show before his release a couple of weeks ago. This rundown should give some insight into what kind of worker Angle is and I hope there is a good reason why Angle got released because this man gave it his all during his WWE run. Thanks again for coming and please leave your comments on this subject and this man’s career.
